Perseverance and its meaning in chronic pain life

Posted by admin 4 February, 2010

The number of pros and cons connected with this life, with every day pain is a high one. When do not mention about all feelings of religion, philosophy or morality, the pros ten to be life giving. And that’s a fact. In the other hand, the cons are life taking.
The disadvantages, well there are plenty of them, starting from drug addiction, gross obesity, don’t caring about what’s going on around, and going on to bitterness and anger, just to point some of them. These vices are ruining you from the inside, burning your insides until you became completely ruined and left alone. I’m really sorry if I’m saying it too straight, but I think there isn’t always time be wondering which words should be used in this blog as there is just too much at stake, like life and mine.
Of course advantages are pretty harder to find in this full of madness life, however their pay off is huge. My personal favorite is perseverance. In Presidents Harry S. Truman “Memoirs” I read some time that being the President is like riding a tiger. You have to keep on riding or be eaten. As a President you could be either on top of events or, if you hesitate, events will soon be on top of you. He said he never felt that he could let up for a single moment.
Well, it’s obvious I’m not a President, but I think you know where I’m going, all that ‘riding a tiger’ thing is wonderful analogy for me for how I feel with my pain. Persistence and stubbornness are useful, however they could not be as good as perseverance. What’s special in perseverance then? According to the dictionary it is, “determined continuation with something; steady and continued action or belief, usually over a long period and especially despite difficulties or setbacks.” They said difficulties? Setbacks? Well I have so many of them I am quite often sure that I am walking backwards (if I’m walking at all). And what about you? Don’t worry, I know.
There are numbers of images that coming to mind when we think about the grit, diligence, resolve and drive it takes to live this life and to live it good. We could still be in charge of our lives with tenacity and steadfastness. Problem by problem, one step at a time and we could deal with everything. It doesn’t matter if it is big or little trouble, at this point life has to be put to single tasks to fight with it.
There is a long list of our problems waiting to be solved, such long that Santa’s gift list looks funny in comparison, it’s clunky and tiring, but when problems are taken one at a time, it’s manageable. For many centuries people have had to deal with adversity. In some old book I found that Plutarch said, “You see, fellow soldiers, that perseverance is more prevailing than violence and that many things which cannot be overcome when they are together, yield themselves up when taken little by little.” It was obvious centuries ago to take one step at a time. You know the story about Tortoise and the Hare? Fox said there, “Slow and steady wins the race.”
There are a lot of life advices in stories for children. Little steam engine kept saying, “I think I can, I think I can,” when have to climb high mountain and eventually said, when he reached the peak, “I thought I could, I thought I could.”
I think it’s enough for today. I must confess I truly believe in each single word of what I wrote. Of course, it’s not easy, but it is DOABLE! Really! I could speak only for me and I’m going down fighting, life is not never-ending, but I want to live it as fully as possible when I have opportunity.
