Default Topamax and tramadol

Does anyone take this combination for continuous pain? I am just thinking of taking it. I have been using Fentanyle pain patches for two years and stopped a month ago. I have tramadol for about a 10-days-use and saw that it could be good for the nerve pain or pain in the hip area? I’ve been on topamax for a few years for migrines. Is this a good combination? Does anyone have positive experience with it? I need help… I can’t do my daily duties and, have less energy and 5 kids. Thanks.

I used to take Topamax and it is for nerve pain. I do not think that Tramadol is for nerve pain. Topamax gave a relief to my nerve pain but the side effects were awful and I could not stand them. Maybe you need to take other dose since you have been on it for 2 years.

I take both Topamax and Tramadol but Tramadol doesn’t work good for me, so I also take dillaudid/hydromorphone. I hope it will be good for you. Good luck!

I had to stop taking Tramadol and start hydrocodone because Tramadol was not strong enough (however at first it worked). Topamax was good for my nerve pain but I have also had to take bigger doses, as my body stopped reacting to it. Now I’ve been taking Neurontin with Topamax. I am going to have a surgery in a few weeks and I hope to stop taking all those tablets after that!

Tramadol does not ease nerve pain, it works only on mild pain. I took it for over a year, it has a SSRI in it which is in anti depressant drugs. I’ve never taken topamax, but I took lyrica and now I am taking neurotin. The lyrica and neurotin are good for my nerve pain. Proxy

Thanks for your answers
I was on lyrica for some time and at first it worked, but as you all know, after some time…it seems as the medications are tolerated and don’t work anymore. I was prescribed Topamax for migraines…I didn’t know it could help with nerve pain…but it did help me lose some weight, so having a few unplanned kilograms is not my problem anymore. But pain is still there. Yes, surprising… Since I stopped using Fentanyle pain patches, I don’t have anything for pain, and have about 30 pills of tramadol at home and found out that some doctors prescribe it for neuralgia (which is what sciatica is sometimes thought to be)… so I thought I would try taking 3 pills a day until I go back to the doctor. I don’t like the visits and am afraid. The easier thing to do would be to go back to my patches when I have one of those bad days. I haven’t seen my pain doctor for almost 2 months…since I went in crying and telling her how horrible of a month I had trying to stop using my patches ( which was MY OWN idea, by the way). Because I was crying, she suggested to make the dose smaller. I have seen her for almost 2 years and I really love her. I was taking about 12 medications when I went to her and she has minimized it to almost nothing. I’ve been visiting her for 2 years and have maybe cried twice…you know how it affects our lives. I’ve had it. It was really bad for me that she wanted me to take lower dose. I need a doctor who has had this pain and understands what it’s like to live with it every day. That would be great. I like the words I saw on this board, that if you cry to your doctor, you seem you suffer greatly, but if you look happy, you can’t be in as much pain as you say. It’s so hard. Oh, and by the way, the maximum dose I can be on Topamax is 50mg twice a day, if it is higher, I behave bad and forget things. When I made the dose smaller to 50mg…I was fine, thanks again that you are here.

Oh, everyone I hear says that the side effects of Topamax are very bad. My doctor suggested it and Lyrica at my first visit but has never told about them again. Should I try Topamax? Can you drive after taking it?

I have good experience with Topamax and yes, you can drive while taking it. When people say it is bad for your short term memory, it is not that you completely don’t remember anything. You may forget some names, or you stop in the middle of the sentence and don’t remember what you wanted to say. You become a little stupid, but it isn’t dangerous to your life. Just the dopey way which led to the term “dopamax”. This is my opinion on it. It also minimized my appetite, I’ve lost 16 lbs. This makes up for the problems with memory!!!

When I first started taking it, I was having migraines and they started at a higher dose…I couldn’t take 100mg twice a day because, like aimless said, I would stop in the middle of the sentence sometimes and forget what I was saying…for example a street name…nothing serious…so, yes, you certainly can drive and have a child. When I started taking 50mg twice a day, all the problems with being “dopy” have gone and I lost about 45 lbs in 6 months. That’s very good when you have extra kilograms to lose, but those who are small are not happy about that. I went to my regular doctor, not to my pain doctor and he was so wonderful. I showed him the report from my surgeon and the very limited list of what I can physically do and he gave me medicines and he wanted to help me so much until I feel better, even though he knew it will take months to treat my disc. It was a relief. He said I could take Lyrica too…I may do that too because it helped me with some other problems before and now that I have more “nerve” pain I think it will help me too. If you have any more questions about Topamax, just ask…

Oh My God – Nicegirl – if you are taking both of these medications, please stop at least one of them. You have quite positive experience with it, but this is what could happen. My wife and I were a happy marriage for almost 10 years and we have two boys. She started taking both of these drugs at the same time and now she cheats on me, she tried to kill herself, she often feels dizzy, has headaches and doesn’t remember about things. Every day I hope all of this is because we just do not feel so close and she has some other medical problems, but what you can find on the Internet about these drugs alone or in combination is awful. Good luck – take care of yourself. G.
